Fungal Nail Lacuna Treatment in Sidcup
A targeted approach to stubborn fungal toenails. Our specialist podiatrists use the Lacuna Method to help antifungal treatment reach the infection, supporting healthier, clearer nails over time.
THE LACUNA METHOD
Fungal nail treatment in Sidcup
Fungal toenails can be thick, discoloured, brittle and embarrassing, and they are often hard to clear. One reason is that the fungus lives in and under the nail, where creams and sprays struggle to reach. Our fungal nail treatment in Sidcup uses the Lacuna Method to help overcome that barrier.
The Lacuna Method is a freehand nail fenestration technique. Your podiatrist carefully creates small, circular holes in the nail plate, which allows an antifungal spray to reach the infection more effectively. You then apply the spray daily at home as part of your treatment.
Is the Lacuna Method right for you?
Treatment is considered after a podiatry assessment. It may be suitable if you:
- Have thickened, yellow, white or brown toenails that look like a fungal infection
- Have tried creams, polishes or sprays without success
- Would prefer a topical treatment rather than tablets
- Are happy to apply treatment every day and attend review appointments
- Want a professional plan from a registered podiatrist
Not every nail problem is fungal, and some health conditions need extra consideration. Your podiatrist will assess your nails and general health first and explain whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
How our fungal nail treatment works
01
Assessment
Your podiatrist examines your nails, discusses your history and health, and confirms that treatment is suitable.
02
Preparing the nail
The nail is cleaned and, where it is thickened, carefully reduced to make treatment more comfortable and effective.
03
Nail fenestration
Small, circular holes are made in the nail plate with a fine instrument. The nail plate itself has no nerve supply, and the procedure is generally well tolerated.
04
Daily spray and review
You apply the antifungal spray daily at home. We review your progress and advise you on how to care for your feet and nails.
What results can you expect?
Toenails grow slowly, so patience is important. As treatment works, healthy nail grows out from the base, and it typically takes around 12 to 18 months for a toenail to grow out fully. Many people notice the new, clearer nail growing through at the base before the old, affected nail has gone. Results vary from person to person, and your podiatrist will give you a realistic idea of what to expect.

Frequently asked questions
The Lacuna Method is a freehand nail fenestration technique in which small circular holes are made in the nail plate, followed by daily application of an antifungal spray, so that treatment can reach the infection in and under the nail.
The nail plate itself has no nerve supply, and most people find the procedure comfortable. Your podiatrist will explain each step and stop if you feel any discomfort.
Because toenails grow slowly, it takes months to see clear nail replace the affected nail, and around 12 to 18 months for a toenail to grow out completely. Your podiatrist will review your progress with you.
Not always. We assess your nails and general health first, and we will tell you honestly if another approach is more suitable or if you should speak to your GP.
Fungal infections can return, which is why good foot hygiene and preventing re-infection are an important part of your plan.
