DIABETIC FOOT CARE
Diabetic foot assessment in Sidcup
Diabetes can affect your feet in ways you may not notice at first. Over time, high blood sugar can damage nerves and reduce blood flow, which means cuts, blisters and pressure points may go unnoticed and heal slowly. That is why regular foot checks are one of the most important parts of looking after yourself when you have diabetes.
Our diabetic foot assessment in Sidcup is a comprehensive check-up that monitors your foot health, identifies any risks and provides personalised care to help prevent complications. It is carried out by a specialist podiatrist, and you can book it as a diabetic foot check in Sidcup whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
Why are diabetic foot checks so important?
- Diabetes can reduce feeling in the feet (neuropathy), so injuries can go unnoticed
- Reduced circulation can slow healing and increase the risk of infection
- Small problems, such as a blister or crack, can become serious quickly if they are not treated
- Regular checks help spot changes early, when they are easiest to treat
- People with diabetes are advised to have their feet checked at least once a year, and some need checks more often
What happens during your assessment
01
Your history
We ask about your diabetes, general health, medication, any past foot problems and your daily foot care routine.
02
Sensation check
Your podiatrist tests how well you can feel in your feet, to check for signs of nerve damage.
03
Circulation check
We check the blood flow to your feet, including pulses and skin changes, to see how well your feet are supplied with blood.
04
Skin, nails and footwear
We examine your skin, nails and foot shape, review your shoes, and explain your level of risk and a personalised care plan.
What can follow your assessment?
- Clear advice on how to check and care for your feet every day
- Treatment for corns, callus and nail problems, carried out safely
- Footwear and insole advice to reduce pressure on vulnerable areas
- Regular reviews, with the timing based on your level of risk
- Advice on when to contact your GP or diabetes team, and referral where it is needed
Where appropriate, we will share our findings with your GP or diabetes care team. Our assessment is designed to work alongside your regular NHS reviews, so please keep attending those too.
Daily foot care when you have diabetes
- Check your feet every day, including between the toes and the soles, using a mirror if needed
- Wash your feet daily and dry them carefully, especially between the toes
- Moisturise dry skin, but not between the toes
- Never walk barefoot, indoors or outdoors
- Wear well-fitting shoes and check inside them for anything that could rub or cause injury
- Do not cut corns or hard skin yourself, and avoid using hot water bottles or heaters on your feet
Contact your GP, diabetes team or NHS 111 the same day if you notice a new cut, blister or sore that is not healing, or if a foot becomes red, hot, swollen, painful or discoloured, or has any discharge or a bad smell.
